Consumer Unit & Fuse Board Services

From straightforward board replacements to three-phase upgrades and surge protection — we install modern, safe consumer units compliant with the latest regulations.

Full Consumer Unit Replacement

We remove your old fuse board and install a brand new metal-clad consumer unit compliant with the 18th Edition of the IET Wiring Regulations. All circuits are tested, labelled, and protected with RCDs or RCBOs.

RCD & RCBO Protection

Modern consumer units use RCDs (Residual Current Devices) or RCBOs (combined MCB + RCD) to protect against electric shock and fire. We can upgrade your existing board to include this life-saving protection.

Surge Protection (SPD)

Since the 18th Edition Amendment 2, surge protection devices are required in most new consumer unit installations. We fit Type 1+2 or Type 2 SPDs to protect your home's electronics from power surges.

Three-Phase Consumer Units

For larger properties or those with high power demands — such as homes with air source heat pumps, EV chargers, or commercial premises — we install and upgrade three-phase distribution boards.

Circuit Additions

Need extra circuits for a new kitchen, extension, or home office? We can add circuits to your existing board or install a secondary consumer unit if your main board is at capacity.

Electrical Certification

Every consumer unit upgrade receives a full Electrical Installation Certificate (EIC) or Minor Works Certificate, issued under our NICEIC registration. Building Regulations notification is included.

Old fuse board needing replacement, Fylde Coast

Why Your Fuse Board May Need Replacing

Old rewirable fuse boards cannot detect earth faults — the most common cause of electrical fires and electric shocks. If your board predates RCD protection, it is not providing the level of safety that modern regulations require.

Many homes across Lytham St Annes and Blackpool still have outdated fuse boards from the 1970s–1990s. Pre-Amendment 3 plastic consumer units also pose a fire risk and should be replaced with metal-clad alternatives. An upgrade is one of the most cost-effective safety improvements you can make.

If you are unsure about the condition of your consumer unit, we recommend booking an EICR. A full house rewire always includes a new consumer unit as standard.

Frequently Asked Questions

A standard single-phase consumer unit upgrade for a typical 3-bed home in Blackpool or Lytham St Annes costs between £600–£1,000 including the unit, installation, testing, and certification. Costs vary depending on the number of circuits and the condition of your existing wiring.
A straightforward replacement typically takes 4–6 hours. If additional work is needed — such as replacing old wiring at the board or adding circuits — it may take a full day. We always confirm the programme before starting.
You likely need an upgrade if your board has rewirable (wire) fuses, lacks RCD protection, is a pre-2016 plastic enclosure, trips frequently, or has no spare capacity for new circuits. The surest way to check is to book an EICR.
An RCD (Residual Current Device) protects a group of circuits against earth faults. An RCBO combines an RCD and MCB (Miniature Circuit Breaker) into one device, giving each circuit its own independent protection. RCBOs are more expensive but mean one fault does not trip multiple circuits.
Since January 2019 (18th Edition Amendment 1) and reinforced by Amendment 2, surge protection must be considered for all new consumer unit installations. Where the consequences of an overvoltage could cause serious injury or significant financial loss, SPDs are now mandatory. We fit them as standard.
Yes, briefly. We need to isolate your supply to safely swap the board. We plan the work to minimise the outage — typically 2–4 hours. We will always let you know the expected timeline before starting.
